(a) whether the incidents of killing of deer by the vehicles plying on National Highways take place; (b) if so, the details thereof; and  (c) the details of the action proposed to be taken by the Government to avoid such incidents? ANSWER MINISTER OF STATE (INDEPENDENT CHARGE) FOR ENVIRONMENT AND FORESTS (SHRI JAIRAM RAMESH)  (a)&(b) Incidents of killing of wildlife including deer by the fast moving vehicles on the National Highways do take place sometimes. Such cases are generally due to rash and careless driving on the national highways passing through forests, National Parks and Sanctuaries. As per the information available in the Ministry, some 9, 2 and 1 death of deer has taken place in the states of Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu respectively during the last six months.  (c) The following steps have been taken by the Government to avoid such incidents:  1. In the new projects of construction of Highways and improvement of the existing highways, provisions are provided for creating underpasses and overpasses on the vulnerable points for the vehicles to ensure safe movement of wildlife.  2. Speed breakers are set up at appropriate locations to control the speed of moving vehicles.  3. Some State Governments have issued orders restricting movement of vehicles during night hours on highways passing through the important wildlife areas.  4. Display boards and caution notices are put up along the highways passing through the Protected Areas.  5. Awareness programs have been conducted to educate people about the conservation of wild animals.
